COVID-19 MASKING GUIDANCE

To help mitigate the rapid spread of the Delta variant, Galen is returning to a campus masking policy for all students, faculty, staff, and visitors – regardless of vaccination status.

This policy is in effect as of 07/29/2021.

GUIDANCE FOR MASKS

  • A mask covering your nose and mouth must be worn in public spaces, such as classrooms, hallways, restrooms, etc.
  • Masks are not required when eating or drinking.
  • In addition to the masks provided by Galen at campus entrances, you also have the option to wear your own masks. Explore the CDC guide to masks

In addition, you may only enter a Galen campus if the answer to each of the following questions is “yes:”

  •  I have not had contact with anyone diagnosed with COVID-19, or thought to have COVID-19, within the last 14 days.
  • I have none of the following symptoms:
Fever or chills, cough, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, muscle or body aches, new loss of taste or smell, sore throat, congestion or runny nose, nausea or vomiting, diarrhea.
  • I agree to wear a mask at all times that I am not eating or drinking while on campus. I also agree to practice social distancing.

If you have any questions or concerns about the COVID-19 vaccine, the Delta variant, or masking, please feel free to reach out Johanna Coursey, MSN, APRN, College Health Nurse, via email at covidnurse@galencollege.edu

ENTERING THE CAMPUS

You may enter a Galen campus if you can answer “YES” to each of the following questions:

– I have not been diagnosed with COVID-19 within the past 10 days.

– Unvaccinated Student/Employee/Visitor: I have not had close* contact with anyone diagnosed with COVID-19, or thought to have COVID-19, within the last 10 days, without wearing a mask.

– I understand that I must always wear a mask while on campus, except when I am eating or drinking.

– I have none of the following symptoms:

  • Congestion or runny nose
  • Sore throat
  • Fever or chills
  • Cough
  • Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
  • Muscle or body aches
  • New loss of taste or smell
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Diarrhea

*What counts as close contact?

  • You were within 6 feet of someone who has COVID-19 for a total of 15 minutes or more over a period 24-hour period, without wearing a mask
  • You provided care at home to someone who is sick with COVID-19, without wearing a mask
  • You had direct physical contact with the person (hugged or kissed them)
  • You shared eating or drinking utensils
  • Someone sneezed, coughed, or somehow got respiratory droplets on you and you were not wearing a mask

NOTE: If you are fully vaccinated and have had close contact* with someone diagnosed with or suspected of having COVID-19, you may enter the building as long as you do not have any COVID-19 symptoms and you wear a mask. The CDC recommends that you get tested within 3 to 5 days. You must notify the COVID Nurse if you test positive or develop any Covid-19 symptoms, even though you’ve been fully vaccinated.

Please contact the College Health Nurse, Johanna Coursey, MSN, APRN, at covidnurse@galencollege.edu if you have any symptoms or any questions.

HIGHER EDUCATION EMERGENCY RELIEF FUND II (HEERF II) Grants –

Galen College of Nursing was allocated $5,652,086 in Higher Education Emergency Relief Funds II (HEERF II) through the Department of Education on February 3, 2021. These funds were made available through the Coronavirus Response and Relief Supplemental Appropriations Act (CRRSAA) passed in late December 2020.

Galen opened the application process and began distribution of these emergency grant funds on April 22, 2021. As of June 30th, $3,843,000 has been awarded to 5,116 eligible students. The application process will remain open until such time as all remaining funds are exhausted.
These funds are intended to assist students with expenses generally incurred by college students such as housing, transportation, personal or books/supplies. In addition, unlike the previous CARES (HEERF I) grant funds, these grants may also be used to cover emergency costs that arise due to coronavirus such as: tuition, food, housing, healthcare and childcare.

All Galen students are eligible to apply for these grant funds. This includes all programs of study – Prelicensure Nursing, RN to BSN completion, and MSN students.

Based on guidance published by the Department of Education, institutions are required to prioritize grants to students with exceptional financial need, such as those who receive Pell Grants. Award amounts were determined utilizing several factors including Estimated Financial Contribution (EFC) from 20/21 FAFSA and enrollment status (Full time, ¾ time, Half time, Below half time) for the current term. Students who are not Title IV eligible or may not be currently utilizing Title IV grants and loans are welcome to apply as well. The award amount may be impacted if there is no current 20/21 FAFSA on file with the College.

For more information on HEERF Grants, click here.

Galen recognizes the importance of the role that nurses play in our society.  We have carefully planned so that we can continue to educate future nurses, while maintaining necessary safety precautions.

Classes are currently transitioning to a combination of on-campus and remote learning for the April 2021 term. Key tests and labs will be in person following CDC safety protocols, while theory will remain remote. This is a constantly evolving situation and subject to change.

Using a virtual format is different from an online course because you will be interacting with your peers and faculty in real-time. Galen will continue to offer traditional online courses as well if you are registered for those, which are described in the Student Catalog.
