Coronavirus (COVID-19) Update

APRIL TERM

Classes have currently transitioned to a combination of on-campus and remote learning.

ADMISSIONS PROCESS

Virtual and in-person admissions appointments can be scheduled with any of our campus admissions representatives by submitting a request for information from our website or calling 877-223-7040. Additionally, we are scheduling remote admissions testing using the ATI TEAS Exam (Test of Essential Academic Skills) and would be happy to reserve a testing date and time. We look forward to helping you in your nursing journey.

COVID-19 SCREENING PROCESS

Galen College of Nursing Campuses are now considered to be in regions with minimal risk of transmission of COVID-19, based on CDC definitions. Beginning June 7, 2021, Galen will implement passive screening (with acknowledgment) for all employees, students, and visitors who enter a campus.

Passive Screening (with acknowledgement) involves:

  • Employees, students, and visitors reviewing screening criteria prior to entering the building, via signage at building entry.
  • There is no requirement to actively answer screening questions or have temperature taken.
  • Upon entry, a Galen representative confirms that the individual is aware of screening criteria and acknowledges that screening questions are answered positively.
    •  Employees and students can demonstrate acknowledgment by showing their Galen identification card.
    •  Visitors can demonstrate acknowledgment to personnel typically assigned to security/greeting/wayfinding upon entry.

You may only enter a Galen campus if the answer to each of the following questions is “yes:”

  •  I have not had contact with anyone diagnosed with COVID-19, or thought to have COVID-19, within the last 14 days.
  • I have none of the following symptoms:
Fever or chills, cough, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, muscle or body aches, new loss of taste or smell, sore throat, congestion or runny nose, nausea or vomiting, diarrhea.
  • I agree to wear a mask at all times that I am not eating or drinking while on campus, if I am not vaccinated or choose not to disclose my vaccination status. I also agree to practice social distancing.
    • Individuals who voluntarily disclose they have been vaccinated and present an official vaccine card (or an image of their vaccine card), along with their Galen ID badge, upon entry to our buildings will be able to opt out of wearing a mask and social distancing while on campus.

If you have any questions, please contact the College Health Nurse, Johanna Coursey, MSN, APRN, at covidnurse@galencollege.edu.

HIGHER EDUCATION EMERGENCY RELIEF FUND II (HEERF II) Grants –

Galen College of Nursing was allocated $5,652,086 in Higher Education Emergency Relief Funds II (HEERF II) through the Department of Education on February 3, 2021. These funds were made available through the Coronavirus Response and Relief Supplemental Appropriations Act (CRRSAA) passed in late December 2020.

Galen opened the application process and began distribution of these emergency grant funds on April 22, 2021. As of June 30th, $3,843,000 has been awarded to 5,116 eligible students. The application process will remain open until such time as all remaining funds are exhausted.
These funds are intended to assist students with expenses generally incurred by college students such as housing, transportation, personal or books/supplies. In addition, unlike the previous CARES (HEERF I) grant funds, these grants may also be used to cover emergency costs that arise due to coronavirus such as: tuition, food, housing, healthcare and childcare.

Students in Galen’s Prelicensure Nursing programs are once again eligible to apply as they were in 2020. The Department of Education has announced that students attending online undergraduate programs such as our RN to BSN program are also eligible for these newly released grant funds. Currently, graduate students are not eligible.

Based on guidance published by the Department of Education, institutions are required to prioritize grants to students with exceptional financial need, such as those who receive Pell Grants. Award amounts were determined utilizing several factors including Estimated Financial Contribution (EFC) from 20/21 FAFSA and enrollment status (Full time, ¾ time, Half time, Below half time) for the current term. Students who are not Title IV eligible or may not be currently utilizing Title IV grants and loans are welcome to apply as well. The award amount may be impacted if there is no current 20/21 FAFSA on file with the College.

[Updated 3/18/21]

Galen recognizes the importance of the role that nurses play in our society.  We have carefully planned so that we can continue to educate future nurses, while maintaining necessary safety precautions.

Classes are currently transitioning to a combination of on-campus and remote learning for the April 2021 term. Key tests and labs will be in person following CDC safety protocols, while theory will remain remote. This is a constantly evolving situation and subject to change.

Using a virtual format is different from an online course because you will be interacting with your peers and faculty in real-time. Galen will continue to offer traditional online courses as well if you are registered for those, which are described in the Student Catalog.
