Galen School of Nursing Tops in Board Pass Rates

TAMPA BAY, Fla. – December 2, 2010 – Galen School of Nursing in St. Petersburg is top among its competition, based on recently released statistics from the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN). The school produced a 100 percent first-time pass rate on the NCLEX-PN® for the April-September 2010 testing period.

According to the NCBSN’s latest program report, Galen was ranked number one among 67 schools within the Florida jurisdiction, and first among 1,087 other practical nursing (PN) programs nationwide. By comparison, the combined first-time PN pass rate for all schools in Florida as well as the national pass rate for all schools during that period was 88 percent.

“For a Galen graduate to pass the NCLEX-PN on his or her first try is highly commendable,” said Tracy A. Ortelli, Ph.D., RN, CNE, Vice President for Academic Affairs for Galen. “Furthermore, as an academic institution with a single focus on nursing education, it is also our expectation. Our program is designed to prepare students not only for NCLEX success but also for a successful career in nursing.”

“We continually strive to improve our students’ educational experience so that we can send competent, safe, and caring nurses into the Florida workforce,” Sharon A. Roberts, MS, ARNP, Dean of Galen’s Tampa Bay campus, said. “A 100 percent NCLEX-PN first-time pass rate is evidence of the quality of graduates, our faculty, and our program.”

This benchmark follows several year periods in which Galen School of nursing has consistently been in the upper-90s in terms of PN passing rate percentage, which testifies to the school’s consistency.

In early 2010 Galen relocated into a new, 35,000-square-foot, well-equipped facility and also opened the Ruth D. Corcoran Simulation Center. This center incorporates the use of human simulators and technology and a hospital setting in which realistic patient scenarios are presented to enhance the clinical education for students. This modality assists the students in developing sound clinical judgments and provides another avenue for future nurses to learn to care for patients.
