Beyond the Why Wall: Misleidy’s Story

At 19 years old, Misleidy Garcia Montero left behind the only home she had ever known. Coming from Cuba, she arrived in the United States with limited English, an uncertain future and a determination to build a better life. Years later, that same determination would carry her through nursing school and into a career dedicated to caring for others.

A Dream Passed Down Through Generations

For Montero, the path to becoming a nurse has looked different from most.

In fact, Montero didn’t arrive in the United States until she was 19 years old. Born and raised in Cuba, she spent much of her childhood surrounded by family, especially her grandmother, whose own unfulfilled dream would eventually shape Montero’s future.

“Growing up, I listened to her tell stories about how she wanted to be a nurse,” Montero said. “Back then, her father wouldn’t let her go to school or have a career. She never got the chance to become what she wanted to be.”

As she listened to her grandmother’s stories of missed opportunities, Montero began to see nursing as more than a career. It became a way to honor the woman who first inspired her.

Starting Over in America

After saving up money in the early 2000s, Montero’s grandmother moved to the United States in search of a better future for her family. In 2006, Montero followed, leaving Cuba behind to begin a new life in America. The transition was not easy. English was unfamiliar, and everything from the language to the culture felt new.

“Starting over in a new country taught me that growth happens one step at a time,” Montero said. “Every day I learned something new. I learned a new language. I didn’t know any English. It was hard, but every day I moved a little closer to my dream of becoming a nurse.”

An Unexpected First Step into Healthcare

Although nursing was always the goal, Montero’s first step into healthcare came through a different path. She spent six years working as a dental assistant, where she developed the communication skills and compassion that would later serve her well as a nurse. Every day, she learned how to provide compassionate care.

“That experience confirmed what I had been feeling for years,” Montero said. “I wanted to do more for patients, and nursing was the path that kept calling me. I thought to myself, ‘You know what? This is my time. I’m going to become a nurse.'”

Finding the Right Path to Nursing

Determined to make that dream a reality, Montero enrolled at Galen College of Nursing’s Tampa Bay campus. Like many adult learners, she was balancing school with the responsibilities of raising a family. Finding a program that fit into her life made all the difference.

“I decided to do the Practical Nursing program, and I loved it,” Montero said. “Classes were on Fridays, and I did my clinicals on Saturdays and Sundays. It was the perfect fit for me.”

While Montero initially envisioned a career in pediatrics, her plans took an unexpected turn after accepting her first position at a skilled nursing facility.

“I never expected it, but I quickly fell in love with caring for older adults. Their stories, their experiences and the connections you build with them are really special,” Montero said.

A Legacy of Inspiration

Today, Montero works in long-term care and rehabilitation, where she thrives in a fast-paced environment and finds fulfillment in helping patients recover and regain their independence. The experience has only strengthened her commitment to the profession and inspired her to continue advancing her education.

Now enrolled in Galen’s Associate Degree in Nursing program, Montero is working toward becoming a registered nurse while continuing to care for patients as a Licensed Practical Nurse.

For Montero, however, nursing is about more than career advancement. It is the fulfillment of a dream that began generations ago with her grandmother and continues to inspire her family today. Her daughter, now in college and pursuing her own healthcare aspirations, has watched her mother’s journey unfold firsthand.

Through language barriers and family responsibilities, Montero never let go of her goal. Her message to others facing obstacles is simple:

“Don’t give up. Sometimes the path forward is not the one you originally planned, but with determination, support and the courage to keep going, dreams can still become reality,” Montero said.
