High School Students Step into the Shoes of a Nurse

While many high school students spent their day in the classroom, students at Socastee High School, in Myrtle Beach, spent the day experiencing what life could be like as a nurse.

For students in the health science pathway, it was a chance to experience and see the healthcare opportunities provided at Galen College of Nursing’ Myrtle Beach campus. During the event, students were able to speak with current nursing students about what it’s like to be in their shoes.

“I want to give young students the opportunity to come inside our Galen home and experience our culture, see the plethora of learning resources provided by Galen College, and our college to be a place they feel drawn to if they want to be a nurse,” said Dr. Kandi Valentine, the dean of Galen College of Nursing Myrtle Beach.

After learning what goes on in the classroom, students scrubbed up to get hands on learning experience. Using patient simulators and high-fidelity mannequins leading to a personal protective equipment (PPE) relay race. Students used these skills and lessons to learn more about the importance of safety and teamwork within the healthcare setting. Nursing starts with a desire to help others.

At Galen, some students begin their nursing education while still in high school, with some campuses partnering with local high schools.  Past students have graduated from Galen with their Practical Nursing diploma even before graduating from high school.
