Small Crayons, Big Impact: A Student’s Mission to Comfort Pediatric Patients

For children, crayons are a staple, something they use every day to draw, color, and express their creativity. But in Nashville, one Galen College of Nursing student is using them to help bring comfort and familiarity during a time when children need it most.

Suelen Hernandez has spent her life wanting to make a difference for others. After joining the Galen Community at the Nashville campus, she wanted to come up with an idea that was simple, but meaningful for pediatric patients.

“As nursing students, we see how important comfort and normalcy are for children in the hospital,” Hernandez said. “The Crayon Initiative felt like the perfect way to support that while also being environmentally responsible.”

That’s when The Crayon Initiative was formed, which allowed crayons to be passed throughout children’s hospitals in Nashville, giving every child a chance to experience normalcy.

Hernandez said when it was announced, the support was overwhelming. Her collection of crayons totaled 1,472 crayons, enough to fill an entire rolling cart. Many people say it was an easy way to give back to the community they work in.

“Seeing everyone come together was really rewarding, especially knowing these crayons will be recycled and redistributed to children in hospitals. It showed how something small can become meaningful when people come together,” said Hernandez.

While a crayon may seem like a small thing, for the children at the receiving end, it brightens even their toughest days.

“I’m grateful for the opportunity to be a part of something that supports children in such a meaningful way,” Hernandez said.
