Advice for Nursing Students from Daisy Award Winners
Starting your nursing education is an exciting and transformative journey! As a new student, you may feel overwhelmed, but remember—you’re not alone. At Galen College of Nursing, experienced nurses and faculty members encourage you to embrace lifelong learning, take challenges one step at a time, and always keep your passion for nursing at the forefront. Whether refining your study habits, staying resilient through tough days, or leaning on a support system, the right mindset can make all the difference. Read on to see the advice from our DAISY Award winners for students who are new to nursing!
What advice would you give a new student just starting their nursing education journey?
“The advice I would give to a new student just starting their journey is to never stop learning. Learning happens in so many ways, sometimes formal and sometimes informal. You can learn from nurses who have tons of experience, nurses who just graduated, your patients, or anyone else if you keep your mind open to growing, both in knowledge and as a person. Everyone has something special to share if we take the time to listen.” – Melissa M.
“The advice I would give to new students just starting their nursing education journey would be to take each day, each class, and each assignment one day at a time. Don’t look ahead at all the things you must complete … just focus on the day at hand to stay in control and to decrease those overwhelming feelings. Finally, always keep the end goal in mind. Nursing school is only temporary (although it feels like it’s never going to end 😊); I promise you, it will end, and when it does … you will have traded a couple of years for a rewarding career that will last a lifetime.” – Ashley G.
“As you begin your nursing education, keep an open mind and be prepared to adapt. The study habits that worked for you in the past may need to evolve to meet the demands of nursing school. Flexibility and a willingness to refine your approach will be essential to your success. We are in this together, so take the initiative to share your needs with your faculty members and ask for help when you need it. Embrace the challenges ahead with confidence and curiosity. This is the beginning of an incredible and meaningful career!” – Lily W.
“There will be tough days, but maintaining a positive outlook can help you navigate challenges more effectively. Remember your ‘why’ and stay focused on your goal.” – María “Lili” T.
“New nursing students should embark on their education journey with a strong foundation of compassion, integrity, and inclusivity. Nursing requires a deep understanding of the human experience and the ability to provide empathetic and holistic care to diverse populations. As you navigate your education, remember to uphold the highest standards of integrity, accountability, and respect in all aspects of your academic and professional pursuits. Cultivate a strong sense of character guided by a commitment to excellence and kindness. Recognize that nursing is not just a profession but a calling to serve others with dignity and compassion. Value the autonomy and worth of every person and promote a culture of kindness, empathy, and understanding. Remember to stay humble and open to growth and always prioritize the well-being and safety of your patients and colleagues. By embracing these values, you will become an effective nurse who makes a positive impact on the lives of others.” – Lisa C.
“My advice to new nursing students is to always approach their journey with resilience and curiosity. Nursing school is challenging academically, emotionally, and personally, but every challenge you are met with will prepare you to provide extraordinary care to others. I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at the age of 6. I was able to see how transformative the support of dedicated healthcare providers can be. That is one of the reasons why I was inspired to begin my nursing journey and pursue a path focused on making a difference.
Stay open to learning, not only from your instructors but also from your classmates and patients. Nursing is a profession that fosters lifelong learning. The lessons you will learn during this journey extend far beyond textbooks and exams. Those lessons will be the most impactful. I have been so fortunate to feel supported in my career by incredible bosses and colleagues who are experienced, smart, compassionate nurses. They have been kind to me and are part of my daily inspiration and learning. Cultivate a strong support system, prioritize your mental and physical health, and lean into the community around you.
Lastly, never lose sight of your ‘why’ — the reason why you chose to pursue nursing. For me, it was a passion for helping people manage all of the complexities of chronic conditions like Type 1 Diabetes. Whatever your motivation may be, let it guide you through those tough days and remind you of the incredible difference you will make. ” – Ashley A.
“Students, always remember why you want to become a Nurse; there will be difficult times and hard days. Keep your head up and stay motivated. Read the material before class. I reassure you that you won’t master the content from reading the material before the class, but you will have an idea about the topics to be covered. Embrace yourself with Patricia Benner’s “From Novice to Expert” model. You will gain skills and confidence as you gain experience. Be persistent and confident. ” – Barbara Z.
“Treat every patient you care for with the same compassion, respect, and dedication you would want for your own family. Every patient has a story, and every interaction is an opportunity to make a meaningful difference in their experience. Always remember to meet people where they are and remain judgment free no matter the circumstance. Nursing is not just about the clinical skills you provide but also about the kindness and empathy you show.” – Katlan Sturgill
“The advice I would give to a new nursing student would be to never forget your “why” of becoming a nurse and always keep your passion for nursing at the forefront to help you push through any challenges you may face.” – Khatereh S.
“Never let anyone tell you that you cannot do anything. That when you turn around and say, “Watch me now” yes, I can! Never, never give up! You have a purpose in life.” – Elsa C.
