Pre- & Post-Licensure—What’s the Difference?

“Pre-licensure” is a term for nursing programs you would enroll in before you’ve earned your license as an RN or LPN/LVN. Pre-licensure nursing programs at Galen include:

This three-year, accelerated bachelor’s degree delivers the knowledge and skills you need to take the NCLEX-RN licensure exam confidently. Join the nursing field ready for the widest opportunities.

You can choose from a wide range of places to work. RNs are needed in hospitals, doctor’s offices, public health clinics, telehealth, emergency rooms, secondary schools and birthing centers.

The ADN program allows you to hit the ground running. It’s your fastest path to an RN without any previous experience required. This program takes as little as 24 months when you go to Galen full-time.

Gain the comprehension you need to confidently take the NCLEX-RN nursing boards. In general, RNs who hold an ADN have similar career outcomes to those with a BSN. However, if you set a goal that requires a bachelor’s or graduate degree, you will need to earn a BSN at some point.

Your education in this program is thorough and high-quality. The pacing means you can start earning in the field of nursing quickly and confidently. The Practical Nursing program (or Vocational Nursing in Texas) takes as little as 12 months when you study full-time. (Evening program available only on the San Antonio campus.) This is the fastest path for most people into a nursing career.

With this pathway, you start building work experience sooner. Then, if you decide to advance your career as an RN, you can pursue an ADN with us, whenever you’re ready.
