Grace, Grit, and a Calling to Serve

Galen faculty bring more than knowledge into the classroom — they bring lived experience, resilience, and heart. Debbie McNair, DNP, PhD, D.Min, MSN, CVRN-BC, CPI, Director of Clinical Education at the Houston campus, embodies all three.

Born in New Orleans and raised in a small town in Mississippi, Dr. McNair describes her journey with honesty: life hasn’t always been easy, but it has been meaningful. That perspective has shaped her career and the way she shows up for students and colleagues every day.

A Lifelong Learner

Dr. McNair has pursued education with remarkable dedication. She graduated as valedictorian of her high school class, earned her nursing degree magna cum laude, and went on to complete multiple advanced degrees, including a Doctor of Nursing Practice, a PhD in Christian Counseling, and a Doctorate in Ministry. She is currently working toward her Certified Nurse Educator (CNE) credential.

Since joining Galen’s Houston campus in August 2024 as a Clinical Education Manager, Dr. McNair has embraced both the rewards and challenges of academic life. Now serving as Director of Clinical Education, she is passionate about helping students and faculty grow both professionally and personally.

“I love empowering and encouraging others,” she shares. “I do my best to meet people where they are with compassion that builds confidence. My favorite part is watching students start their journey — and then seeing them walk across the stage at graduation, ready for the NCLEX.”

That sense of purpose has guided her through both meaningful moments and difficult transitions. When she was promoted to the role of Director of Clinical Education, the new leadership role came with unexpected challenges.

“I felt isolated and overwhelmed at times,” she says. “But I didn’t stop. I reached out, asked questions, and leaned on others. Communication is key — and those experiences ultimately brought our team closer and made us stronger.”

That approach continues to influence the way she leads and supports her team today.

Beyond the Classroom

Dr. McNair has a deeply rooted commitment to service. She is an Air Force veteran who served during Operation Enduring Freedom, where she cared for hundreds of wounded soldiers.

She is also deeply involved in her community and professional circles. From teaching as a professor at the Institute for Teaching God’s Word to leading her own initiatives — including her publishing company, Draped In Praise, and her health and counseling organization, Shades of Healing — Dr. McNair is dedicated to helping others share their stories and improve their well-being.

Her research has focused on reducing the risk of heart disease among African Americans in rural communities. It’s one way she’s working to address health disparities and improve outcomes where they’re needed most.

Outside of work, Dr. McNair brings the same energy and joy to her personal life. She enjoys singing, dancing, cooking, reading, and watching sports — especially cheering on her favorite teams, including the Texans, Saints, and 49ers (not necessarily in that order). Above all, she values time with her family, including her son and “daughter-in-love.”

At her core, Dr. McNair is driven by a desire to uplift others.

“I love encouraging people to reach higher than they ever imagined,” she says. “My life is a testament to grace and mercy — and I believe the best is yet to come.”

Through her leadership, service, and unwavering positivity, Dr. McNair is making a lasting impact at Galen and beyond.
