5 Reasons to Attend a Nursing School Open House Before You Apply
How do you know if a nursing school is the right fit?
Program details and campus photos can tell you a lot, but visiting in person offers a completely different perspective. An Open House gives you the chance to experience the learning environment, meet faculty and staff, ask questions and better understand what your future as a nursing student could look like.
Here are five reasons an Open House can help you make a more confident decision before you apply.
1) Picture yourself on campus
Every nursing school has its own culture, and visiting in person helps you determine whether it’s right for you.
At a Galen Open House, you can tour classrooms, simulation labs and study spaces while getting a feel for what everyday campus is like. Depending on the campus, you may also see demonstrations of our high-fidelity manikins and learn how simulation experiences help prepare students for real patient care.
It’s one thing to read about a nursing program. It’s another to picture yourself learning there.
2) Meet the people who’ll support you throughout nursing school
One of the biggest advantages of attending an Open House is the opportunity to meet the people who will actually be supporting your success.
During your visit, you’ll be paired with an Enrollment Counselor who serves as your personal guide throughout the admissions process. Whether you’re ready to apply or just exploring your options, they’ll be there to answer your questions and help you understand your next steps.
You may also have the opportunity to connect with faculty, deans, academic advisors, student financial services representatives and current students. Many campuses also have student ambassadors available to share what it’s really like to attend Galen.
3) Get answers about your specific situation
No two students have the same path to nursing school.
Instead of searching online for general answers that may not apply to you, a Galen Open House gives you the opportunity to have one-on-one conversations with the people who will personally handle your admission.
You can even complete application steps while you’re there, such as ordering transcripts or scheduling an entrance exam if you’re ready to move forward, but there’s no pressure to do anything on the spot. You can take the next steps at your own pace.
4) Learn what nursing school is really like
An Open House gives you a clearer picture of what your education will look like beyond the classroom.
You’ll learn about Galen’s nursing programs, curriculum, clinical experiences and career opportunities after graduation. Depending on the campus, you may also meet representatives from HCA Healthcare who can discuss employment opportunities, as well as community organizations who may be able to offer scholarships or financial assistance.
You’ll also have the chance to hear questions from other prospective students. Many visitors leave with valuable information they hadn’t even thought to ask about before arriving.
5) Leave with confidence about your next steps
By the end of your visit, you’ll have a better understanding of what comes next, whether you’re applying, gathering documents or continuing your research.
Many students also leave with something even more valuable: confidence.
Seeing the campus, talking with faculty and connecting with students often helps prospective students feel assured that they’re making the right decision for them.
As Galen student Meagan Zigrye shared, “Open House was such a great experience. Being able to talk to students and ask what they enjoyed and how they were handling the challenges of nursing school was exactly what I wanted. I loved the small college community and how the faculty and staff made Galen feel like the place to be. It made my decision easier.”
