When Galen College of Nursing joined the HCA Healthcare family in 2020, there was no greater supporter of the collaboration than former Senior Vice President and Chief Nurse Executive, Dr. Sammie Mosier.

Dr. Mosier began her HCA Healthcare career as a bedside nurse in 1996 at the Frankfort Regional Medical Center in Kentucky. Over the years, she advanced into leadership roles, always deeply committed to elevating the voice of the nurse and advancing the practice of nursing. She worked tirelessly to address the national nursing shortage, expand educational opportunities, and mentor the next generation of nurse leaders.

This passion carried over into the integration of Galen College of Nursing and HCA Healthcare, where Dr. Mosier championed the advancements in nursing education made possible by the collaboration.

“Sammie Mosier was a nurse’s nurse and a steady force behind the partnership between Galen and HCA,” said Galen CEO Mark Vogt. “She believed deeply in our students and in the role they would play in the future of healthcare.”

Though Dr. Sammie Mosier passed away unexpectedly in late 2025, her remarkable legacy lives on through her visionary leadership, her passion for patient care, and the many colleagues she deeply loved and mentored.

Galen College of Nursing recently paid tribute to her legacy during a ceremony at the Aurora, Colorado campus, which also houses the HCA Healthcare Center for Clinical Advancement. This first-of-its-kind integration directly reflects Sammie’s vision of driving innovation and collaboration to advance the future of nursing, from education to practice.

“As we remember Sammie, we honor not only her accomplishments but the way she showed up for others – with compassion, humility, optimism, and an unwavering belief in potential,” said Dr. Tracy Ortelli, Galen’s president and chief academic officer. “Her legacy lives on in the leaders she nurtured, the improvements she championed, and in every nurse who carries forward her commitment to excellence and care.”

At the heart of the ceremony was the dedication of the “Sammie Mosier Student Success Center.” Bringing together leaders from HCA Healthcare and Galen College of Nursing, the gathering was as much a celebration of Sammie’s vibrant life as it was a tribute to her lasting impact.

“Sammie Mosier’s impact reached far beyond any one organization,” said Dr. Erica Rossitto, senior vice president and chief nurse executive at HCA Healthcare. “She believed deeply in the power of education to shape skilled, patient-centered leaders. This Student Success Center reflects that belief and the way she showed up for every nurse and every future nurse, every day.”

A sentiment echoed by Galen CEO Mark Vogt, who believes deeply in Sammie’s vision of innovation, collaboration, and supporting the education of current and future nurses.

“This Student Success Center is a place for our students to study, to grow beyond the classroom, and to pursue their dream of becoming a nurse,” said Vogt. “It reflects the standard Sammie set and the impact she had on all of us.”

A standard of excellence that will live on through the Sammie Mosier Student Success Center.
