Preparing for the Unexpected: Galen Nursing Students Train for Disaster Response

Healthcare is a daily necessity for communities around the world, but when disaster strikes, those needs become urgent and immediate. In these critical moments, healthcare workers are called to respond quickly and effectively in often chaotic environments.

To prepare students for these real-world scenarios, Galen College of Nursing’s Dallas campus hosted a disaster response activity in their Nursing Practice Adult Health Lab (NSG4100L). The hands-on training focused on equipping students with the practical skills and confidence needed to act when emergencies occur.

“In a high-pressure, multiple-casualty scenario, they must quickly prioritize care, think critically, and collaborate as a team—skills that are essential for safe and effective nursing practice,” said Deborah Hughes, the instructor of the class.

During the activity, students gained experience working with mannequins designed to simulate real-life symptoms and medical conditions. Scenarios included assisting patients trapped under debris, managing emergency childbirth situations, and treating individuals with foreign objects lodged in their bodies. These immersive exercises challenged students to think critically, prioritize care, and respond under pressure, skills that are essential during real disaster situations.

“This simulation reinforces our commitment to preparing practice-ready nurses by strengthening critical thinking, clinical judgment, and teamwork. It truly takes a coordinated effort to respond effectively in moments like these, and providing our students with immersive, hands-on learning opportunities is essential to their growth and long-term success,” said Terry Douglas, the chief nurse administrator for the BSN program.

Exercises like this play a vital role in preparing the next generation of nurses for the unpredictable nature of healthcare emergencies. By providing realistic, hands-on training, Students learning how to respond with skill, compassion and confidence when it matters most.
