San Antonio Students Step Up During Hospital Power Outage

A routine clinical day for nursing students at PAM Health Specialty Hospital in San Antonio recently took an unexpected turn. In that moment, these future nurses demonstrated the calm, confidence, and compassion they bring to patient care.

At around 3:00 in the afternoon, a sudden power outage swept through the hospital. Galen students from Clinical Section 185C 03D03 were gathered in a conference room with their instructor when the lights abruptly went out.

For the students, there was no hesitation. They quickly transitioned from learning to leading.

“Within moments of the power loss, the students immediately sprang into action,” shared Krysta Glass, instructor at the San Antonio campus. “They rushed to the floor to assist with ventilating patients who are ventilator-dependent and to ensure the immediate safety of everyone in their care.”

As emergency systems engaged and hospital staff mobilized, the Galen students did exactly what they have been educated to do — think critically and put patient safety first. Working alongside their clinical faculty member and hospital staff, the students stepped into real-world nursing roles under pressure, demonstrating the readiness, confidence, and compassion that define Galen nurses.

Moments like these underscore the importance of clinical education that prepares for the unpredictable realities of patient care. In the face of uncertainty, these future nurses showed leadership, teamwork, and an unwavering commitment to their patients.
