Galen Student Shows Perseverance in Earning Academic Scholarship

Finishing nursing school is a marathon, and no one knows that better than Ulanda Campbell, an ADN student at Galen College of Nursing’s Miami campus. For years, she juggled family life with her dream of becoming a nurse. Now, thanks to the Next Generation Healers Scholarship, her journey is on the fast track.

Ulanda’s story is a powerful example of resilience. A single mother of two, she works full-time as a patient financial services representative in a Pembroke Pines hospital emergency room while attending Galen, working towards her Associate Degree in Nursing. Her journey to nursing became deeply personal after a mental health crisis, which she says reignited her passion for patient care and mental health advocacy.

The Next Generation Healers Scholarship, created by Banyan Treatment Centers, was designed to support students who embody empathy and a calling to serve. The scholarship committee says Ulanda’s application stood out immediately.

“Ulanda’s journey is a powerful reminder that the future of healthcare lies in the hands of individuals who lead with heart,” said Kaitlin Jones, a spokesperson for Banyan Treatment Centers. “We are honored to support her as she works toward becoming a nurse.”

Ulanda was searching online for financial aid when she found the scholarship. “I was in a desperate situation and trying to figure out how to pay for school,” she explained.

The moment she learned she won, her reaction was unforgettable. “Oh my gosh. I was so excited. I was in class and screamed… It was life changing.”

After graduating from Galen, Ulanda plans to start her career as an ER nurse, giving back to the community that inspired her. Her long-term goals include moving into hospital leadership and even returning to Galen as a nursing instructor to inspire the next generation of healers.

“It’s a great journey,” Ulanda said. “Challenging, yes, but it’s exciting to learn all the new things I need to know to be successful.”
