Preparation Meets Purpose: How A San Antonio Student Stepped Up in a Critical Moment

Alex’s clinical shift at Methodist Hospital’s Emergency Department began like any other — until a critical trauma case was rerouted via air care.

As the helicopter team arrived, the department moved swiftly into emergency response mode. The crew needed immediate assistance transferring the patient to a stretcher, and without hesitation, San Antonio ADN student Alex Sanchez stepped forward to help.

Reflecting on the moment, Crissy Womble, DNP, RN, NPD-BC, LSSGB, Division Associate Vice President, shared, “Alex’s response in that moment reflected the very best of what it means to be a Galen nurse: courageous, compassionate, and committed to helping others when it matters most.”

What followed was a complex emergency requiring focus, coordination, and calm under pressure. Alex joined the emergency team, providing CPR and supporting care delivery during a moment where every second mattered. Throughout the response, Alex remained focused and attentive, working seamlessly alongside experienced clinicians.

The Charge Nurse Coordinator on duty took note of Alex’s steady presence and professionalism throughout the event, sharing that his ability to anticipate needs, communicate effectively, and support the team stood out during the emergency.

Later, as the team reflected on the experience, Womble emphasized the lasting impression Alex made during the emergency.

“We are so proud of his actions and the professionalism he demonstrated under pressure. His willingness to step up reminds us all of the profound impact our students make, even in the most difficult circumstances.”

Alex’s actions are a powerful reminder that Galen students are not only gaining clinical skills — they are living the mission of nursing in real time. In moments when preparation meets uncertainty, it is compassion, courage, and teamwork that rise to the surface.
