Continuing Sammie’s Legacy: Silos to Symbiosis

Dr. Sammie Mosier, the former senior vice president and chief nurse executive with HCA Healthcare, has become one of the most influential leaders within Galen College of Nursing through her many contributions. Mosier spent her life advocating for nurses, driving clinical excellence and supporting the development of entry level nurses.

Mosier’s vision for HCA Healthcare and Galen was recognized during this year’s Nursing Research Day in Nashville, TN. Erica Rossitto, Mosier’s successor, highlighted integrating ‘Sammie’s vision,’ throughout the curriculum and HCA Healthcare’s facilities. The main focus of this initiative includes investing in staff, students and faculty as well as leveraging technology and innovation.

“With nurses leading patient care, their voices are vital in shaping our strategic vision,” said Erica Rossitto, the Chief Nurse Executive for HCA Healthcare.  “A nurse-centered mindset brings alignment, establishes clear priorities, and serves as our compass forward.”

One of the main goals is deepening operational integration and partnerships which started with the integration of HCA Healthcare and Galen in 2020. The impact of the partnership can already be seen through reduced costs, the acceleration of transition to practice, building real world data sets and credibility.

This is achieved through ‘Silos to Symbiosis,’ which was created from Mosier’s ideas. Instead of working alone, the idea allows for multiple Galen campuses to work with HCA Healthcare to achieve innovation and answers to research faster.

Now, along with Crystal Dugger, the chief clinical learning and operations officer at HCA Healthcare, and Dr. Tracy Ortelli, the chief academic officer at Galen College of Nursing, Rossitto is looking to the future. Following Mosier’s vision, we are now looking into research behind safety and nursing sensitive subjects. Rossitto says it’s already progressing, citing an all-time high for nursing engagement, with more than 20,000 students at Galen across 25 campuses.

The continued impact of Dr. Sammie Mosier’s vision is evident in the growing alignment between education, research and clinical practice across HCA Healthcare and Galen College of Nursing. By prioritizing collaboration, innovation and investment in people, this partnership is not only preparing the next generation of nurses but also advancing solutions to some of healthcare’s most pressing challenges. Mosier’s legacy serves as a reminder that when nurses are empowered to lead, research and innovate, the future of patient care becomes more accessible for all.

An academic article about Silos to Symbiosis, written by Dr. Sammie Mosier and Dr. Tracy Ortelli, has since been published. You can find the link to the article here.
