Leading With Presence: Melissa Alvarez’s Nursing Journey

As a nurse leader, Melissa “Mel” Alvarez, MSN, RN knows being present is essential, for her staff and for patients.

Working as a House Supervisor at HCA Florida Capital Hospital, Alvarez oversees hospital operations  and coordination across all hospital units.

“The staff knows that I’m present, they can call me anytime, and I will be there for them,” Alvarez said.

With a nursing foundation rooted in compassionate care and patient advocacy from her time as a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit nurse, Alvarez sees leadership as a way to expand her impact beyond individual patient interactions. Through HCA Healthcare and Galen College of Nursing, she found a pathway to grow as a leader while continuing to care for patients and support nursing teams.

“I think nursing leadership is very important,” Alvarez said, “because we’re the ones who advocate for the people who advocate for our patients.”

A Nontraditional Path into Nursing Leadership

Alvarez took a nontraditional path to nursing, transitioning from a decade in hospitality management to a career where she could make a lasting difference. As a student, she balanced overnight shifts and family responsibilities before finding her true calling in the NICU. Though initially hesitant about the emotional demands of neonatal care, a shadowing experience confirmed it was exactly where she belonged.

Caring for newborns and their families brought her to HCA Florida Capital Hospital, where a new $5 million NICU opened in 2022. Alvarez joined the team that year and soon realized she had found an environment that supported professional growth and development.

“I knew I wanted to advance my career, I just never really had the opportunity,” Alvarez said. “But going to HCA Healthcare gave me that opportunity.”

Applying Education in Real Time

Shortly after joining HCA Florida Capital Hospital, Alvarez sought to enhance her leadership potential by enrolling in Galen’s College’s Online RN‑to‑BSN program. Through this no-cost benefit for HCA Healthcare colleagues, she earned her degree in August 2023.

“Going through Galen was perfect for me,” Alvarez said. “Once I went through the BSN courses and saw the leadership courses and what nursing leadership entails, I knew I wanted to move in that direction.”

Alvarez was then promoted to the House Supervisor role just before starting Galen’s Online Master of Science in Nursing (MSN program). She quickly found that the learning did not stay in the classroom.

From communication strategies to staffing decisions, Alvarez was able to immediately connect her coursework to real‑world leadership.

“What’s great about Galen’s MSN program is being able to apply what you’re learning in real time, into the operations of the hospital,” she said.

Seen Early as a Leader

Those who supported Alvarez throughout her academic journey saw early signs of the leader she would become.

“From the very beginning, I was struck by Mel’s authenticity and determination,” said Dr. Yunieski Farradas, DNP, MSN/Ed, FNP, Director of Clinical Education at Galen College of Nursing’s Miami campus. “She presented herself as a student who was not only eager to learn but also deeply committed to growing both personally and professionally.”

“She demonstrated humility, curiosity, and a genuine passion for nursing that immediately set her apart,” Farradas added.

It didn’t take long working as a House Supervisor for Alvarez to earn the respect of her leaders.

“Mel supports change by being present and engaged with her staff,” said Nichole Urban, MSN, RN, Associate Chief Nursing Officer at Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center and former ACNO at HCA Florida Capital Hospital. “She listens to their concerns, works with them to find solutions, and makes sure they feel supported in the process. Because she has built strong relationships with her team, she is able to move initiatives forward while keeping staff involved and confident in the change.”

Advancing Excellence Through HCA Healthcare Partnership

Through HCA Healthcare and Galen College of Nursing, Alvarez advanced her education, applied new skills in real time, and grew into a leadership role that impacts her entire hospital. Her journey reflects what’s possible for post‑licensure nurses who want to continue learning and lead with confidence.
