Katie Gamez, a two-time graduate of Galen College of Nursing, was recently honored with a Daisy Award for her exceptional and compassionate care as an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) nurse at Methodist Hospital Stone Oak in San Antonio, Texas. Having earned her Vocational Nursing (VN) diploma and an Associate Degree in Nursing from Galen, Gamez credits her education with instilling the importance of compassionate care in her career.

As a radiologic technologist, Rebecca Abner earned a good living near her home in southern Kentucky, but she felt unfulfilled. She could see patients’ problems on X-rays, but she couldn’t intervene to help them heal. “It just wasn’t enough,” she said. “I always wanted more.”

For nursing students, the “why” that drives them to care for others is a powerful motivator. For Jennie Phillips, a Galen College of Nursing student, the decision to become a nurse is rooted in a desire to help and care for young children. Her “why” was recently brought to life when Phillips and three fellow students from Galen’s San Antonio campus volunteered at Methodist Children’s Hospital‘s annual NICU Reunion event.
